The Check-In Question Nobody Thinks to Ask
Most check-ins ask two things. What went well. What didn’t.
That’s not wrong, exactly. It’s just incomplete, and the missing third question is usually the one that actually matters.
What do you want more of?
Why this one gets skipped
It sounds like it should be obvious to ask. It isn’t, because most people running a check-in are quietly auditing. Looking for problems to fix, praise to hand out, small corrections to make before they build up. That’s useful. It’s also entirely backward-facing. It tells you about last week. It tells you very little about where he actually wants to go next.
A lot of submissive men have never been asked this plainly. They’ve got an answer sitting there, fully formed, and they’ve assumed nobody wants to hear it, so it never comes up.
Not because the answer is shameful.
Because nobody built a door for it.
What happens when you actually ask it
I’ve watched this open things a “how are we doing?” question never touches. Not because the want itself was dramatic. Usually it’s small. More praise after something specific. A rule he didn’t realize he could ask for. A kind of attention he’s been quietly hoping for and never named because naming it felt like asking for too much.
The size of the answer doesn’t matter. What matters is that asking it directly, on a set day, every time, tells him the wanting itself is welcome here.
That’s a different message than “tell me if something’s wrong.” One invites problems. The other invites him to actually tell you something about himself.
The part that actually takes discipline
Ask the question, then stop talking.
The silence after is uncomfortable, and it’s exactly where the honest answer often lives. Most people can’t stand a pause, so they fill it. Offer a guess, suggest an example, make it easier.
Every time you do that, you’ve handed him an answer to agree with instead of giving him the space to find his own.
Let it sit. Let it get a little awkward.
Sometimes the answer doesn’t come immediately. That’s okay too. He’s not taking a test. He may simply be realizing, possibly for the first time, that he’s actually allowed to want something and say it out loud.
Doesn’t asking mean handing over control?
I’ve heard this from women directly. If I ask him what he wants, aren’t I taking direction from him? Doesn’t a confident Domme already know what to give, rather than needing to ask?
No. And the mix-up is worth untangling, because it stops a lot of women before they ever try this.
Asking what he wants and being obligated to give it are two completely different things. The question is information. What you do with that information is still entirely yours.
You can hear “I want more praise” and decide to give more. You can decide to give less. You can decide it’s something you want to explore later. You can even decide it’s something you don’t want to give him at all.
Nothing about hearing the answer commits you to anything.
The asking doesn’t hand over the decision. It just makes the decision an informed one instead of a guess.
And I’d actually flip the fear around. Being afraid to ask because it might reveal something you’d feel obligated to act on is the less confident position, not the more confident one.
That fear only makes sense if some part of you suspects that knowing means complying. That you don’t fully trust your own authority to hear a want and still choose freely what to do with it.
A woman who’s secure in her authority doesn’t need to stay uninformed to feel in charge. She can know exactly what he wants and still be the one who decides what happens next.
Try it this week
Add one line to your next check-in.
What do you want more of?
Then close your mouth and wait.
Whatever comes back, even if it’s small, even if it takes him a minute to find the words, that’s information you didn’t have before.
And sometimes the thing that moves a dynamic forward isn’t fixing what’s wrong.
It’s finally finding out what someone has been hoping for all along.
I see you. I hear you. You are safe. And you will fly.
