Everyone in this space has heard the word consent.
Most people think they understand it. A yes before things start. A safeword if things go sideways. Check the box, proceed.
That’s not consent. That’s the floor. And a lot of people are living in the basement thinking they’re on the top floor.
Real consent is ongoing. It’s not a form you sign at the beginning of a dynamic and never revisit. It’s a conversation that never fully ends — because people change, desires shift, comfort levels move in both directions, and what felt right in January might feel completely different in June.
It’s specific. “I’m okay with this” is not the same as “I’m okay with all of this, always, in every context.” Get specific. Ask specific questions. Give specific answers.
It’s revisable. You are allowed to change your mind. About anything. At any time. A good dynamic makes space for that without punishment, guilt, or withdrawal of affection.
It’s enthusiastic or it’s a no. Compliance isn’t consent. Someone going along because they’re afraid to disappoint you is not a yes. Learn the difference.
It requires safety to exist. You cannot truly consent in an environment where you’re afraid of the consequences of saying no.
It’s a Dominant’s responsibility too. If you’re in a leadership role in a dynamic, consent isn’t just something you receive — it’s something you actively create conditions for. You check in. You watch for the unspoken. You make it easy for the person you hold to tell you the truth.
Consent is a practice. Like recovery. Like any relationship worth having.
You do it every day or you’re not really doing it.
