Figuring It Out Together

Figuring It Out Together

Two people building something new don’t need the right answers. They need a way to talk about it.

Three conversations to have

 1. What we each want. In your own words, not each other’s.

2. What we each won’t do. Limits are information, not rejection.

3. How we’ll check in. Before, during and after all count.

Tools That Help

~ Yes / no / maybe lists. Each of you fills one out alone, then you swap and talk through it.

~ A “lab” night. Tell each other it’s an experiment, and that either of you can call it off if it comes out weird. It takes the pressure off.

~ A weekly check-in. Pick a regular time to talk about how it’s going, including the awkward parts.

Common Bumps

~ One of you talks more. Give the quieter one small, easy ways to answer, like a color or a word.

~ One of you wants more than the other. Go at the speed of the slowest yes.

~ One of you gets anxious about making a wrong call. Shrink the decision. Start with one small thing, not money or daily life, and talk to your therapist if you have one.

Try This Tonight

Each of you writes three things on a yes/no/maybe list. Trade, and talk for twenty minutes. No fixing, no promises.
